What is car insurance?

Car insurance can pay out should your car be damaged, stolen, vandalised, set on fire or if you are in a road traffic accident. As an absolute minimum it will cover the cost of damage to other vehicles, members of the public or another person’s property as a result of an accident – these are categorised as Third Parties in insurance terms. Insurance policies come in three main categories:
  • Third party – the most basic level of cover available. As above this covers other party vehicles, property or members of the public
  • Third party, fire and theft – based on third party insurance but with the bonus of cover for your vehicle should it be damaged by fire or if it stolen.
  • Comprehensive – this is the highest level of cover and includes the cost of damages to your own car if you are at fault in an accident, as well as any third parties.

What factors affect the cost of my premium?

Insurance premiums can vary by insurer, which is why it's worth comparing policies to ensure you get the protection you need. The price you pay depends on many different factors, but the main considerations are:
  • Your car – its make, model, age and price
  • How you will be using the car – the millage done per year
  • Your personal details – such as your age, home location, where the car is kept and what you do for a living
  • Your driving history, and whether you have built up any no claims discount
